Is that bassinet really safe? A new study shows that parents use them at some point in their baby’s life, and you may be shocked to learn that there is no government regulating of this “mini crib”The U. S. CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) has some guidlines for bassinets, but no safety standards have been created by the government. So the bassinet you bought or was given to you as a gift, may or may not conform to the CPSC’s suggested guidelines- mainly because it dosen’t have to.
Here are some importatant safety measure you should consider:
Check to see if you bassinet meets the CPSC guidlines- sturdy with a strong bottom and wide base, has smooth surfaces no hardware sticking out, it’s legs lock, and has a mattress that is firm and fits. Choose one that has sides made with materials that air can pass through, mesh is a good material. Follow bassinet weight and height requirements.
Don’t put your infant to bed with his or her favorite blanket or that plush toy like the ones that came from Aunt Fran in that wonderful babygift - Your precious little one does move in their sleep and could get tangled in a blanket or pushed up against that plush toy or other soft object in the bassinet or crib and suffocate.
This list of do’s and don’ts is long I’ve listed only a few here- more will come later. But protecting our precious littles ones is of the utmost importance to all involved in a baby’s well being. Don’t you think?
